4 Paws for Ability at UK is an organization on the University of Kentucky’s campus that breeds, trains, and places service dogs to children and veterans with disabilities. The reason for the campaign is that, being at a large university, there is an ongoing problem of people not understanding the importance of real, working service dogs and how they impact individuals with disabilities lives’. Ultimately, 4 Paws for Ability at UK would like to see a change in attitude about the program – people aren’t simply bringing dogs to campus every day. They work hard with the puppies to ensure that they’re learning the skills they need to progress through the program.
The most persuasive, overarching theme that we could apply to this campaign, is the idea that the service dogs in-training on campus are students just like everyone else. They walk around campus, they attend classes, and sure, they might not be paying attention in CHE 110, but they’re definitely not the only ones. The skills that service dogs in-training are learning are different than your average student, but in the end, both two-legged and four-legged UK scholars are graduating with invaluable skills that will improve at least one person’s quality of life. As such, service dogs in-training should be treated with the respect one should give to another student. That means refraining from distracting (petting or otherwise) 4 Paws dogs from their training, unless given permission from their foster.
